At the beginning of our artists steal unit we were presented with this question, what is the difference between copying and stealing? Unfortunately I was not in school on that day, but if I were to answer it it would have been a very literal answer like stealing is taking something without asking and is illegal and copying is using an idea someone else has already used or trying to be like a person. I would have totally missed this questions application in art. After this unit i know that copying in art is using an idea or concept that has already been done plane and simple while stealing is taking something and putting your own spin on it and making an old concept or idea new and yours.
For my artists steal projects I stole the idea of drawing Swedish Fish and made it my own by drawing them being poured in a fish bowl. I used water color as my medium, I tried to make everything inside the fish bowl lighter and more watery than out side the bowl and I tried to make the water look realistic.
The merit of this type of art work comes from the twist you put on it. If I had done a project that was a pun the merit would come from the twist being funny, if it was something that had a really deep meaning behind it the merit would come from that. For this specific piece of art work comes from taking something and making a very literal representation of it, aka putting a candy fish in a fish bowl. :)
